The Dippers: Please Join Us!

The Dippers began with a group of Glacier Valley fifth graders in the fall of 2019 who wanted the 2nd verse of the Alaska Flag Song to become official because it is inclusive of the many cultures, including Alaska Native, representative of today's Alaskan. The lyrics of the 2nd verse of the Alaska Flag song by Carol Beery Davis in 1986 does just that! She also honors Benny Benson, the 13-year-old Aleut who designed the state flag as a seventh-grader at the Jesse Lee Home in Seward as part of a statewide contest in 1927. Since then, our numbers have grown! The fifty student members at Glacier Valley have made presentations, phone calls, fliers, illustrations, a rap, and this website to encourage more Alaska citizens to support this cause and persuade legislators to vote yes to House Bill 193. We have collected signatures throughout Juneau, but need statewide efforts to get this bill passed. If you would like to help, please see our Get Involved and Contact Us pages.

History of the AK Flag Song 2nd Verse: Interview with Connie Munro 11/21/19

While attending a Tlingit Haida Elders Luncheon, the Dippers met Connie Munro who helped spearhead efforts in 2011 to get SB 94 passed: a bill to make the 2nd verse of the Alaska Flag song official. Unfortunately, the bill stalled in the House. In this interview Connie provides a brief history of the 2nd verse of the Alaska Flag Song.
